What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth (also known as third molars) are the most posterior teeth in your mouth. They sit behind the second molars and in front of the premolars. In most cases, they begin to emerge during late adolescence or early adulthood, although sometimes they do not erupt at all. Only about 55% of healthy individuals have four wisdom teeth – also known as a complete manifestation of the third molars. Because it’s rare to have four wisdom teeth fully emerge, you might hear these teeth referred to as “third molar impaction.”
Do all wisdom teeth need to be extracted?
Not all wisdom teeth need to be extracted. They are the third set of molars located at the back of your mouth and erupt between 18 and 25. When a wisdom tooth erupts along the tissue, the wisdom tooth can be retained in the mouth. Only little concern as long as the person can brush, floss, and clean it . If a patient has a history of dental cavities, gum disease, or cannot complete thorough oral health care at home. We may recommend removing it surgically because it puts them at a much higher risk for developing more serious problems. Including abscesses, periodontal infections, and even need surgery to remove infected tissue around their teeth.
There are three situations where all wisdom teeth need to be extracted. First, if the tooth is too close to an adjacent normal tooth. Secondly, if the angle at which the wisdom tooth erupts from the gum line is such that it may cause damage to its neighbouring tooth. sometimes in situations of advanced periodontal disease.
How is wisdom tooth extraction performed?
The decision to remove a wisdom tooth is not simple as it requires removing more than just the tooth itself. Depending on the position and health of the remaining teeth, dentist might choose to remove the whole wisdom tooth. Sometimes a part of it, or clean the area around the wisdom tooth so you can keep it in place. The procedure depends on several factors, including what condition the oral tissues are in and how many teeth must be removed at once.
Local anaesthesia will be given by the dentist to numb the area around the tooth. A small incision is then made into your gum, where the swelling and inflammation are located. The dentist will then remove the tissue and bone part of the wisdom teeth and clean the socket before extracting it.
May need Stitches to close the surgical area and promote healing of the overlying tissue.
These stitches need to be removed by a surgeon after a few days. If the stitches are dissolvable, they come out on their own after three to five days.
Recovery time after wisdom teeth extraction?
The initial recovery and healing from a wisdom tooth extraction usually occur over three to five days. After having your wisdom teeth removed, you will likely have some swelling. Even bleeding from the surgical sites and temporary pain is seen as your mouth adjusts to its new state.
